One of Sydney’s hottest DJ’s, Alice Q has created an exclusive playlist
for sass & bide in celebration of sass & bide Style Week.
Fashion & music collide as Alice mixes her ultimate
sass & bide playlist inspired by our latest collection Moon Shadow.
Refusing to be defined by one specific genre, Alice’s sound is as un-categorical as it is unique. Boasting an eclectic mix of beats and an energetic passion for music, she has experienced a meteoric rise since bursting onto the scene in 2009. Hailing from Sydney, Alice is a proven performer, spending her time between the US and Australia she is used to spinning warm up, peak time and closing sets for almost every bar & club in Sydney, as well as holding residencies at some of the hottest clubs in NYC (Le Baron, Le Bain, Up & Down, ACME, Goldbar & Baby Grand).

With a distinctly feminine sound and style to match, Alice has played at many high profile soirees and has curated fashion shows and events. With a soft spot for retro synths and deep bass lines, her diverse musical tastes venture far and wide. Layering soulful funky beats with the sexy rhythms of indie- disco and deep house, a typical set often spanning the wide spectrum of house music, from disco, nu–disco to jazzy, funky and tech. Alice’s ability to play tasteful music across a variety of genres with a firm understanding of style and edge has secured her gigs for some of Sydney’s most respected names in the music scene including Sneaky Sundays, Modular, One Love and Sweat It Out.

WHAT IS STYLE?
Style is a personal thing, it is about knowing yourself, knowing what you like and what interests you and being able to be creative with that. You don’t necessarily need money to be stylish, you just need creativity, flair and confidence to pull it off. Shopping at flea markets, mixing old with new and recycling or altering old outfits are great ways to find your personal style.

SUM UP YOUR STYLE IN THREE WORDS
Polished yet edgy

WHICH THREE WORDS BEST DESCRIBE SASS & BIDE MOON SHADOW?
Whimsical, soft, feminine

WHY DOES STYLE MATTER?
Style identifies you and sets you apart from others. Not everyone has to like your style but as long as you’re true to your own style that’s all that matters.

THREE ARTISTS ON YOUR PLAYLIST?
The xx, Sade, The Avalanches

WHAT WERE YOUR INSPIRATIONS FOR THE PLAYLIST YOU HAVE CREATED FOR SASS & BIDE?
I wanted to draw on the inspiration that was used for the collection, the song Moon Shadow by Cat Stevens. I've always been a big Cat Stevens fan, my dad used to play it to me when I was a little girl so it brings back good childhood memories. I wanted to create a playlist that was a bit whimsical and fairytale like - like the Moon Shadow lyrics and my recollection of the songs in that album as a child. I’ve included a mix of current songs alongside some 70s disco and even a little bit of folk, mostly pulling songs that sounded as if they could have a 70s era vibe to them or were soft and ambient like the inspiration for the collection.

YOUR STYLE IS AN EMBODIMENT OF ALL YOU CREATE, HOW IS THIS A REFLECTION OF YOU?
I think this happens naturally as an artist or creative when you love what you do or are passionate about something, it shows through in your work.

What do you most love about DJing?
Being able to listen to music for a living is pretty cool, also being able to share your music with complete strangers - especially when they like it ;)

Most amazing DJ moment you have had?
I loved DJing at Space in Ibiza - that was always my favourite club and so glad I finally got to play there before it closed.

What is your favourite music festival?
The best festival I have been to is Calvi on the Rocks in France for an overall European beach party experience. And then you can’t really go past Coachella for the wow factor, it is always pretty epic.

Which artists are influencing & inspiring you right now?
At the moment I’m loving Purple Disco Machine, Claptone and Midnight Magic.

Who are a couple of women whose style you most admire?
Sade, Jane Birkin, Kate Moss

What’s the most exciting thing happening now in the world of music?
At the moment with streaming and the internet making everything so accessible the music industry is changing a lot. So many new genres and producers coming onto the scene and consumers have more control over what they listen to and what they want to hear. It has pros and cons obviously, theres a lot more music to have to sift through to find the music that you love but there is also so much more variety and I guess thats a good thing. More accessibility to good music and new artists is always a positive thing at the end of the day.

Tell us one thing we might not know about you?
My original inspiration to become a DJ came from being in Ibiza and falling in love with techno, and that’s what I originally played for years until my style gradually evolved into a softer type of house and disco music. I spend less time in nightclubs these days but I still love techno and any chance I get to play it ;)

Why do you love sass & bide?
I love that it has always stayed true to its uber-feminine style, flowing dresses, embellishments, structured jackets and tops, always being re-invented and drawing from different inspirations in a creative way.
