After working with home-grown celebs like Asher Keddie (hair envy top 10), Cate Blanchett and fashion icon Jessica Gomes, we were thrilled to welcome renowned hair stylist Keiren Street to envisage the hair direction for The Master & The Muse. Inspired by the fluid lines of the collection, Street brings us a new contemporary version of the 90s look with a rock chick edge. We’d be remiss not to ask the master to talk us through the look and give us the low down on how to recreate it at home.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE HAIR LOOK?
"90s cool girl meets effortless rock chick."
WERE YOU CHANELLING A PARTICULAR WOMAN AS INSPIRATION FOR THIS LOOK?
"Confident with a nod of mystery."
WHAT WAS THE MODELS NATURAL HAIR TYPE?
"Alenya's hair had a slight natural wave, so we emphasised this and built out her natural texture with a Cloud Nine Wand; using the various sizes in the barrel to match all the bends and curl sizes."
WHAT HAIR TYPE IS THIS BEST SUITED TO? CAN EVERYONE ACHIEVE THIS LOOK OR DO YOU NEED SOME NATURAL CURL TO START WITH?
This look can work with any hair texture; straight or curly. You just need the right tools to create it. I recommend prepping the hair with a heat protectant that has a slight holding factor, then allow to dry. When it comes to hot tools, you don’t necessarily need super-high heat, especially if you have fine hair. I use Cloud Nine as you have full temperature control. When styling hair, I usually turn down the temperature dial, unless the hair is thick and coarse. This allows me to hold the hair around the barrel for longer as opposed to burning hair strands.”
HOW CAN STRAIGHT HAIR TYPES GET THIS LOOK?
"I recommend building up texture with Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Sea Salt Spray and experiment with using different size curling wands to create the movement and curl you desire."
IS IT A HIGH-MAINTENANCE LOOK?
"This style looks better as it's worn in. To refresh, spritz with sea salt spray and rework the hair with the wand if needed. Finish with a texture powder to it give extra boost."

CAN YOU TALK US THROUGH THE SPRING FALL 18 MAKEUP DIRECTION AND YOUR INSPIRATION?
"For this collection it was all about accentuating natural features, fresh skin and creating a flawless full brow. For some shots we added a metallic smokey eye, ready for the dance floor."
DOES THIS LOOK ECHO ANY BIG TRENDS IN MAKEUP?
"Coloured metallics and a nod to the 90s supermodel is very on trend right now."
HOW IMPORTANT IS THE BROW THIS SEASON AND HOW CAN US MERE MORTALS GET THE LOOK?
"Brows are always a key part of any makeup look. It's important to work with what you have and don't get too caught up on a trend; once you pluck it is hard to go back! If you want to thicken your brows you can try a brow volumising fibre gel. My go-to is the Benefit 24 hour Brow Setter. It thickens the hairs and keeps them in place and looking full. If you want a darker fuller brow without committing to a permanent tint you can use a darker toned brow gel that simply washes off."
WHAT ABOUT THAT AMAZING SMOKEY EYE WITH THAT POP OF RED? CAN YOU BREAK DOWN WHAT YOU DID AND WHAT YOU USED TO ACHIEVE IT?
"Using a smokey eye palette l used a wash of dusty brown all over the lids, under the eyes and blended heavily into the eye sockets and brow bone. l lined the eyes with a black soft pencil and smoked out the outter edges with a charcoal shadow and soft fluffy blending brush. Concentrating on the inner corners and inner lid l patted a red copper for an intense pop of metallic. I like to do intense eyes first up, then clean up underneath so as to keep the skin fresh and free from any loose eyeshadow pigment."
LOVE THE GOLD DETAIL ON HER CHEEK. WAS THAT A NOD TO GUSTAV KLIMT?
"As the collection was inspired by legendary artist Gustav Klimt whose work heavily features women surrounded by gold, it would be wrong of me not to add a touch of gold into the makeup design. Gold and metallics on the lips, eyes and cheeks are a great way to add some vibrancy and festive flair."
WHAT SHOULD BE IN OUR MAKEUP BAGS THIS SEASON AND WHY?
"An amazing multi use warm copper eyeshadow palette like the Urban Decay Naked Heat Eye Shadow Palette from Mecca Cosmetica. Right now I am loving the Mecca Cosmetica Enlightened Trio, and the Benefit 24 hour Brow Setter, which has the best brow brush imaginable."
